| Inequalities in health: Is social capital the missing link? - Chris Drinkwater (Reports) Better Health, Fairer Health, the regional strategy on health and well-being for the North East has made a commitment to develop appropriate measures to allow publication of an annual regional progress report on social capital. Inequalities in health have remained stubbornly resistant to intervention and there is some evidence that, rather than narrowing, inequalities are widening. The seminar expolored the relationship between social capital and inequalities in health. Drawing on 12 years experience of the West End Health Resource Centre, the presentation also looked at practical ways of building social capital through engagement in activities. It suggest that commissioners across statutory agencies will need to be more imaginative if they are to build social capital and to reduce inequalities. | |

| “Enhancing Social Capital : Lessons from Leicestershire” (Presentation/Publications) The guest speaker was Martin Gage, Chief Executive, North West Leicestershire CVS and Lead Officer for Stronger Communities, Leicestershire LAA. Martin showed how voluntary organisations in Leicestershire have measured social capital by training volunteer interviewers and established specialist posts in Councils for Voluntary Service to promote social capital at community level. |
